Aggressive Behavior

“My seven-year-old son is very loving and does well in school. But lately, he’s been very aggressive. He pushes kids at school and his brother at home. The principal calls me once a week. Please help!”

— Heather

Hi Heather, aggression can be one of the hardest behaviors for parents to see. Since this is happening “lately,” it may signal something deeper. Here are some possible causes and solutions:

  • Has something changed in his life? (new sibling, moving, friend changes, family stress)
  • Tip: Ask about his feelings and listen without judgment.
  • Do adults allow him choices and independence?
  • Tip: Give him small decisions—what to wear, help plan dinner, when to do homework.

Try using “curiosity questions” to help him reflect:

  • What happened?
  • How did you feel?
  • What were you trying to accomplish?
  • What could you do differently next time?

Tip: Create a “cool down corner” at home where he can manage strong emotions safely.

  • How much aggression does he see in TV, games, or online?
  • Tip: Limit exposure and discuss respectful behavior together.
