Positive Discipline - Kindergarten Misbehavior FAQ

Kindergarten Misbehavior

“My 5 1/2-year-old son’s teacher says he is friendly and enthusiastic, but struggles with self-control. He often needs repeated directions, forgets them, and sometimes hits or misbehaves. What can I do to help him follow directions in class?”

— Paula, Parent

Melanie Miller explains:

  • Your son is likely energetic and enthusiastic—wonderful traits that can sometimes clash with structured classroom settings.
  • Some children naturally stand out in a classroom; being “at the bottom” doesn’t define their potential.
  • Consider his behavior at home: does he focus on play, interact well with peers, and manage his energy? Comparing environments helps identify patterns.
  • Kindergarten may be challenging if it emphasizes long periods of sitting, listening, and seatwork without active engagement.
  • Ask questions to understand his self-perception: How does he view himself in relation to the teacher and classmates?
  • Recognize that children internalize how adults perceive them. Avoid labels like “troublemaker,” which can create self-fulfilling prophecies.
  • Maintain a supportive, listening approach at home. Let misbehavior stay at school, and offer empathy when he recounts challenges.
  • Have faith in his ability to learn and behave constructively. Reinforce his sense of competence and belonging.
  • Increase your own parenting skills using resources like Positive Discipline by Jane Nelsen. Share successful techniques with the teacher.
  • Limit parental enforcement of school behavior at home; avoid sending the message that your child is a “problem” outside of school.
  • Volunteer in the classroom or offer small supports for the teacher, such as making copies or preparing supplies.
  • Meet with the school counselor to observe your child and suggest classroom interventions.
  • Support the teacher as a partner rather than focusing solely on your child’s deficits. Collaboration improves outcomes for both student and teacher.
